DO: The Right Way to Enjoy Cannabis in San Francisco
San Francisco has 10+ licensed consumption lounges where you can buy cannabis and consume it on-site — the closest thing to Amsterdam in America. Since AB 1775 (Jan 2025), lounges can serve food, beverages, and host live events. See our Lounge Guide. This is the signature SF cannabis experience and the easiest legal consumption option for visitors.
San Francisco has 80+ licensed dispensaries across nearly every neighborhood. Verify any dispensary through the Department of Cannabis Control. Licensed dispensaries guarantee lab-tested, properly labeled products. The illicit market accounts for an estimated 60% of California cannabis sales — do not be part of it.
You must be 21 or older to buy recreational cannabis. Any valid government-issued photo ID works — driver's license, state ID, passport (including international passports), or military ID from any state or country. No residency requirement. Dispensaries check ID at the door, no exceptions.
Most SF dispensaries accept debit cards, but cash is always safest. ATMs are on-site at every dispensary. Credit cards are not accepted at cannabis businesses due to federal banking restrictions. Budget for approximately 23–25% total tax on top of listed prices. SF has zero local cannabis tax — the lowest total rate of any major California city.
New to cannabis? Start with 2.5–5 mg THC for edibles or one small puff for flower. Edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in. Do not take more because you "don't feel anything yet." Tell your budtender it is your first time — they hear it every day and can help. More at TryCannabis.org.
When transporting cannabis in a car, keep it in the trunk or a sealed container not accessible from the passenger area. Open containers of cannabis in a vehicle can result in fines.
You are in the city that invented legal cannabis. Walk the Castro streets where Dennis Peron ran his dispensary. See 1444 Market Street, the "Brownie Mary Building" where the Cannabis Buyers Club served 8,000 members. Visit Haight-Ashbury where the counterculture bloomed. Read the Origin Story.
DON'T: Common Mistakes That Can Get You in Trouble
Cannabis is banned everywhere tobacco is banned in San Francisco. That means all parks, sidewalks, restaurants, bars, and within 15 feet of doors, windows, and vents. The fine is $250. "Stepping outside" or walking down the sidewalk is still public consumption. Use a lounge or private property.
San Francisco has significant federal property where cannabis is completely illegal regardless of California law:
The Presidio — National Park Service
Alcatraz Island — National Park Service
Ocean Beach — NPS sections
Aquatic Park — National Park Service
Marin Headlands — just across the Golden Gate Bridge
Federal law enforcement operates in these areas. Do not bring cannabis to any of these locations.
Transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal crime — even to other legal states like Nevada or Oregon. Do not take San Francisco cannabis across the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin (some areas are federal). Do not bring it on flights. Consume or dispose of it before leaving California.
California has strict cannabis DUI laws. Penalties include approximately $10,000 in fines, a 10-month license suspension, and possible jail time. Use Muni, BART, Uber, or Lyft. Do not consume in a moving vehicle, even as a passenger. San Francisco has excellent public transit — there is no reason to drive.
Most San Francisco hotels prohibit cannabis use in rooms and on property. Smoking or vaping in a hotel room can result in cleaning surcharges of $250+ and potential removal. Ask before you light up. For cannabis-friendly lodging, see Cannabis Tourism for options like Hotel Kabuki and Noe's Nest Hideaway.
An estimated 60% of California cannabis sales occur in the illicit market. Unlicensed products are not tested for pesticides, heavy metals, mold, or accurate THC labeling. Street sellers, pop-ups, and social media dealers are illegal. Use only DCC-licensed dispensaries.
Providing cannabis to anyone under 21 is a serious criminal offense. If children are present, store all products securely out of their sight and reach.
