America's Amsterdam
San Francisco has more than 10 licensed consumption lounges — spaces where you can purchase cannabis and consume it on-site, legally, in a social setting. This is genuinely the closest experience to Amsterdam's coffee shop culture available anywhere in the United States, and no other American city has anything comparable at this scale.
For visitors, this solves the fundamental problem of legal cannabis tourism everywhere else: you can legally buy cannabis, but where do you legally consume it? In most cities, the answer is "your hotel room, maybe, if the hotel allows it." In San Francisco, the answer is "at a lounge, right now, with other people, while watching drag shows or playing trivia."
Most SF lounges are attached to dispensaries. You buy cannabis in the retail section, then move to the lounge to consume it. Some lounges allow you to bring your own cannabis, but most require on-site purchase. Entry is typically free with a cannabis purchase.
AB 1775: The Game Changer
In January 2025, California enacted AB 1775, which transformed what consumption lounges can offer. Before this law, lounges were essentially smoking rooms attached to dispensaries. After AB 1775, they can:
- Serve non-cannabis food (snacks, full menus)
- Serve non-alcoholic beverages (coffee, juice, kombucha, mocktails)
- Host ticketed live performances (comedy, music, drag shows, trivia nights)
This single law turned SF's lounges from smoking rooms into genuine social venues — places where you want to spend an evening, not just a few minutes. Barbary Coast now hosts comedy nights. Moe Greens runs live jazz, trivia, and comedy throughout the week. The lounge scene is evolving rapidly.
