SoMa & Downtown Dispensaries

From SF's first consumption lounge at Barbary Coast to Moe Greens' weekly jazz and comedy, the Financial District's sole rec shop, and a nautical-themed dispensary at Fisherman's Wharf — downtown's cannabis scene is as varied as the city itself.

SoMa: Where Cannabis Meets Nightlife

South of Market (SoMa) has always been San Francisco's grittiest, most experimental neighborhood — the home of leather bars, underground clubs, tech startups, and now some of the city's most iconic cannabis venues. SoMa is where you will find Barbary Coast, the dispensary that opened SF's first licensed consumption lounge back in 2013, and Moe Greens, the 4,200-square-foot cannabis palace that SFGate named "Best of 2026."

Downtown and the surrounding areas add more variety: a boxer's dispensary with a 30-foot mural, the only recreational shop in the Financial District, and a Fisherman's Wharf location designed for tourists who want to buy legal cannabis without venturing deep into the city.

Notable SoMa & Downtown Dispensaries

Barbary Coast — 952 Mission Street

Barbary Coast opened in 2013 and holds a place in San Francisco cannabis history that no other venue can claim: it was the city's first licensed consumption lounge. Named after San Francisco's infamous 19th-century red-light district, the space is designed as a speakeasy — exposed brick walls, stained glass, Art Deco touches, and a dab bar where you can try concentrates with help from staff. The retail dispensary downstairs sells flower, edibles, concentrates, and pre-rolls, while the upstairs lounge hosts comedy nights, trivia, and live shows.

Since AB 1775 (January 2025), Barbary Coast can now serve food and non-alcoholic beverages alongside cannabis, making the lounge experience even more complete. For a deep dive, see our Barbary Coast Lounge Guide.

The Gold Standard

Barbary Coast is the single best place in San Francisco for a first-time lounge experience. Buy cannabis downstairs, consume it in the speakeasy upstairs, and enjoy comedy or trivia nights. It has been doing this since 2013 — longer than anyone else in the city.

Moe Greens — 1276 Market Street

Moe Greens occupies 4,200 square feet on Market Street and operates one large, unified lounge with a popular dab bar. The venue runs weekly events — Bingo (Tuesdays), Trivia (Wednesdays), Live Jazz (Sundays and Thursdays), and Comedy (Fridays and Saturdays) — making it feel more like a social club than a dispensary. SFGate named Moe Greens “Best of 2026” in its cannabis category.

The retail dispensary carries a full product line, and the lounge allows on-site consumption of anything purchased in-store. For the full breakdown, see our Moe Greens Lounge Guide.

The Apothecarium — 527 Howard Street

The Apothecarium's SoMa location at 527 Howard Street brings the same luxury retail experience found at its Castro flagship to the downtown core. Located in the heart of SoMa near Moscone Center, this location is particularly convenient for conference visitors and business travelers staying in downtown hotels. The same premium product curation and well-trained staff that earned the brand its Architectural Digest feature are on full display here.

Authentic 415 — 165 Mississippi Street

Authentic 415 is co-owned by professional boxer Karim Mayfield, and the dispensary wears its San Francisco roots proudly. The exterior features a 30-foot mural that has become an Instagram landmark in the Dogpatch/Potrero Hill border area. The shop focuses on locally sourced products and carries brands with strong SF and Bay Area connections. If you are looking for a dispensary with genuine local character rather than a corporate chain feel, Authentic 415 delivers.

2ONE2 — Financial District Closed / Rebranding

2ONE2 held the distinction of being the sole recreational cannabis dispensary in San Francisco's Financial District. As of early 2026, 2ONE2 is reported as closed and rebranding to Sticky Fingers per Yelp listings. Check current status before visiting. For the thousands of workers, hotel guests, and visitors in the FiDi on any given day, this location was the most convenient option without leaving downtown.

Seaweed — Fisherman's Wharf

Seaweed is the only dispensary in the Fisherman's Wharf tourist area, and it leans fully into its location. The shop has a nautical theme with a sea turtle mural on the exterior, making it easy to spot. For the millions of tourists who visit Fisherman's Wharf each year, Seaweed is the most accessible dispensary in the city — no need to navigate Muni or BART to another neighborhood. The staff is accustomed to first-time buyers and out-of-state visitors, and the product selection covers all the basics.

Tourist-Friendly

If you are staying near Fisherman's Wharf and do not want to travel across the city, Seaweed is your spot. If you are staying downtown near Union Square or Moscone Center, The Apothecarium at 527 Howard is within walking distance. (2ONE2 in the Financial District has closed and is reportedly rebranding to Sticky Fingers.)
